M-T:
What's going on, everybody, man? This is your boy Brother M-T. And we're back with another Metric Mate Podcast. Hopefully, y'all have taken the time to listen to our previous podcast, because if you have it, I mean, it's cool you're joining in and I appreciate you being here, but you've got to support us in the long run. So go over to all your major podcast and platforms. Go to TheMetricMate.com, check us out because we've got some amazing people, oh man, that's all that I do. ... Is all they do is ..., all I do is talk the winners, brother. And we got another winner up in here today, man. We got Shamiel Gary in here to give you all the lowdown, man, ex-NFL, athlete, brother is out here changing lives and changing world. You know what the deal is. I'm not the best person to give you the lowdown on these people, man. If anybody knows these people, they know themselves. And that's why I bring them on, because they've got a story to tell and I always learn something. I hope you learn something. I'm giving you this energy. He's going to give you this energy. So Shamiel, appreciate you beyond more than you know for being on with us today, man.
Shamiel Gary:
Well, thank you.
M-T:
Are forever grateful for all of our guests and especially grateful for you, man, for coming in and sharing this positivity, this awesomeness that you bring to the day. You know, we appreciate it. So go ahead and drop on the community. What you got going on, who you are. So they know who we're talking to today.
Shamiel Gary:
Yeah, no, I appreciate it. I don't know if I could bring that same energy that you're bringing, but, you know, I would probably go a couple of notches down, but appreciate you having me on. I'm excited to do this with you. And, you know, just a brief segment of who I am. You know, my name is Shamiel Gary. I am Tulsa, Tulsa-born, bred and born. I love to say that right there, Tulsa, Oklahoma. I went to Booker T. Washington, where we put out the most NFL athletes in the state of Oklahoma. Man, I love God. I'm a father. I'm a children's book author, motivational speaker. And I'm just just looking to grow, you know, every single day. That's the mission, just to grow and get one percent better every single day. And my life goal, I think this is more important then than anything I could ever do. My lifelong goal is to fill a baseball stadium up with people, because if that many people are in the stadium, that's that's how many people I impacted. And that's my entire goal. That's my entire mission in life. And I played in NFL and NFL stands for not for long. So I got four years in the NFL. I play for the Dolphins, Patriots and Bills, is a cutthroat business, but I learned a lot of valuable information that I'm able to share with the next generation, corporations, nonprofits. And I enjoy doing that right there. So that's just a little bit about myself.
M-T:
I love it, man, love it. So, see? Didn't I tell you, I bring some amazing folks out here and they give you everything that they got and it's cool. It's cool. Is going adding a little flavor if you can't get up here where I'm at, it's all right. They go get me, then they go get you because you have a smooth on them, you know. Thank you. Dropping it down. I love it. I love it. So you're doing a lot now, man. You're motivating companies and groups of people. You're motivating individuals. You're coaching high-performance teams and helping people grow and become better. How did your experience being at Oklahoma State, going into the NFL, being at that level of competition, how did that experience help you in what you're doing now in helping other people grow and reach their full potential?
Shamiel Gary:
Yeah, I think just football, in general, has taught me this right here. Control what you can control. You know, it's not about what happens to you, it's about how you respond. And I live by that principle to this day. And that has helped me get past many situations in my life from my mom passed away from cancer to me getting locked in the bathroom five minutes before I have to do a speech or this morning locking my niece in the bathroom. You know what I mean is it's a combination of things. And I try to share that with everyone. You know, if you want to get better, you got to get better. If you want things to change, you have to change the way you respond to a lot of things in our lives because we can't control a lot of it. But you can control your attitude. You can control your effort. You can control your perspective. And so I share that with the next generation. I'll share that with companies. And that's how my football career has impacted what I share in different organizations as well as it impacts me to this day. So that's one of the things I focus on and I focus on the four M's. So I think everyone should have these four M's in their life. So mission, mindset, mastery and maintenance. So mission, mindset, mastery and maintenance. And I think that's so key because everyone needs a mission. Everyone needs a strong why, strong reasons to get to where they trying to go and then what type of mindset do you have? You know what I mean, like if you take your mindset, if you're not getting what you want, check your mindset and then what are you doing to master the skills you were trying to, where you're trying to go. And then lastly, take care of yourself. I think this is the biggest M that people struggle with, is the maintenance part. Man, what are you doing to take care of yourself on a daily basis? Because, you know, I think about my father. My father doesn't have this amount of energy he needs to come see us at times or to get up. You know what I mean, different things like that. So it's bigger than you. So take care of yourself. I want to be 90 years old, still playing with my daughter and my grandkids and all that good stuff. So that's what I've learned through the NFL and through Oklahoma State and all my different experiences.
M-T:
There it is. There it is. Man, the four M's, man, mission, mastery, mindset and maintenance even summed it all up and dropping gems from the beginning. Immediately, as soon as the word is out of your mouth, you droppin' gems on the community, man that's off the chain. So being able to see past the obstacles obviously is a big part of the four M's. And of that statement that you made at the beginning of your dialogue right there is being able to see past those obstacles. And definitely football is the type of sport where you run into obstacles, whether it be an injury that keeps you from being able to participate with your teammates or being moved to another team into another city, where now you have to re-establish relationships and continue to prosper progress and go on a Sunday and be the best that you can be. What can you give the community about your journey, your thought process, what you do on being able to get past these times of turmoil and continue to move forward and shine?
Shamiel Gary:
Right, right. So, you know, I like to ask myself questions. You know, I think if you want to get down to the real things, if you want to make a change, ask yourself the right questions. And so one of the questions I like to ask myself is if I stay the same way, if I keep doing the same things I've been doing, how will it negatively impact my life? Who will I be disappointing? Where will I be five years from now, 10 years from now, 20 years from now if I keep doing the same things and then if I change it, vice versa, what will change my life as well? And then also bring myself back to the point where I was, when I was with the Bears and I had this attitude of I was with the Patriots and I got released and then I got picked up by the Bears. I'm on active roster right before the game is about to, that Friday, we found out D.J. Williams, he wasn't going to be able to play. So in the NFL, this is in college. We're not on scholarship. They had to let someone go and pick someone else up and move them from the active roster. Well, guess who they cut me. And so from that point forward, I was on practice squad the rest of the year and I didn't have the mindset of controlling work control, I didn't have the mindset of it's not about what happens to you, it's about how you respond and the perspective of, OK, I may be on practice squad, but I'm going to get better every single day. I get a chance to go against Brandon Marshall, Martellus Bennett, Jay Cutler, but I didn't see it that way. I just saw it as I'm getting screwed, I'm playing the victim and I didn't change my mind. And so I'm just wasting days, wasting days, wasting days. And so after that year, I was like, man, Shamiel, I'm never going to do that. I'm never gonna do that again. I have to change the way I look at things and I have to get better every single day. And so I put myself back in that place. If I go back to that Shamiel, I'm not gonna get anything done, you know? And so I like to ask myself questions and I like to remind myself that Shamiel right there won't get anything done. And so I challenge anyone who is struggling with change. Ask yourself the right questions, write down. You know, actually put this pen to pad and write down the answers to these questions and then remind yourself where I'm at right now. What has it got in me? And then kind of close your eyes and visualize which one in the future and how that would change. Who will that impact? And I believe that's one of the key places I start right there.
M-T:
That's real. That's real. And a lot of people don't understand the power of that, putting the pen to pad, being able to write down what you see, what you need, what you envision for yourself in the future, and that having power, that written word, having power. So being able to translate that to the community, man, is definitely a huge thing. And even though Metric Mate is trying to move everybody away from the pen and pad thing kind of get in there right now, Metric Mate is out here trying to bring the smart device to everybody so you no longer need your pen and pad in the gym. We're not trying to take the pen and pad away from every aspect of your life. The gym is just one portion. Is the fitness part. Now, I'm saying and that's the physical fitness part. But there's also a mental and spiritual fitness part, which we all get into a little bit later on. But that's where that magic, that glory happens. When you write things down, it can actually look at them and understand what they are going forward, brother. That's real. Real.
Shamiel Gary:
Right. Right.
M-T:
So a pandemic has been affecting everybody, we've been out here trying to adjust, trying to be our best in every way of life with all the change that's going on, how has this situation, this moment in time changed your perspective as far as what you do and how you disseminate your message?
Shamiel Gary:
Yeah, so it's been an interesting deal for me, you know, because as soon as the pandemic hit. So before I even get there, you know, January or February, I'm rocking, like this is about to be my best year yet. I feel it coming like I've had my, I got all my speaking engagements booked for the entire year. I've been doing it as a speaker for three years. And on that third year, I'm like, yes, I'm finally hitting my stride right now with this. And covid happens. And so I get calls and everyone's letting me know like, hey, we're going to have to reschedule for next year or we're going to cancel everything. So I'm like, hey, this is rough. But during that period of time, it gave me a chance to actually reflect on the best way I want to communicate my message to people. And what I realized is I was doing a lot of one-off engagements, so I will go in and I will speak one time and then I will leave. And if I realize I want to make a deeper impact than that, you know, I remember a ton of people, tons of speakers coming in and saying some good messages, but I only remember, like maybe one percent of them, you know, and I've had that like a hundreds. I'm not gonna say thousands. That's about a lie right there. But hundreds of speakers come in and speak to me. But I realize, OK, now with Zoom, I can do multiple speaking engagements where I follow up with a company or a school or organization three times instead of one time. And now I don't have the stress, which I still love live events, but I don't have the stress of trying to find a hotel and flight and go in one time and leave, you know. So it's been a good opportunity to sit down and reflect on what I really want and how I can really convey my message the way I truly want to, right? And then the next thing that allow me to do was my true passion? I love speaking, but I also love helping athletes. And so we actually met in like a clubhouse room where I was talking about the business that I just started is called the Athelete roundtable. And it's all about holistic development and helping athletes become the best version of themselves. Or as I like to say it, not only become like elite athletes, but become elite individuals. And so I just launched it like a month ago. And I'm saddened by how many lives covid has impacted. But it has been a blessing to slow down, think and process, prepare and plan to win in my next chapter of my life, you know, so that's how it's impacted me and my new perspective and have been able to kind of adapt and pivot. I think everyone needs to have that ability to be able to adapt and pivot.
M-T:
You said it right there. You got to be able to adapt. You got to be able to pivot. You got to be able to see where the hole is, you say, and not keep doing these allusions to football references. But I mean, I enjoy college football. I enjoy NFL. And as my coaches used to say back in the day when I had the opportunity to be on the field, is that football is a metaphor for life. Yes, just like I would say about chess, like I would say about tennis, just like we say about entrepreneurship, it's a metaphor for life. But in that instance, it is really makes the most sense. If you're running really fast, then you can't see the opportunity. You don't get to play, develop, and now you run into the back of somebody.
Shamiel Gary:
Right. Right
M-T:
You just take your time. You know what I'm saying, keep your feet moving, which is the most important part. You don't stop. You've got to keep your feet moving and you keep your head on a swivel and you observe. Then you can see where the opportunity is and you can make it happen. And even if the opportunity that you felt like was designed for you, like you said, you had everything lined up, you had your schedule figured out, you knew where it was supposed to be going. You knew what you were supposed to be doing, but you took this opportunity to slow down. You took this opportunity to see what was changing around you. And you found opportunities to be able to do even more.
Shamiel Gary:
Right.
M-T:
That is something that a lot of people miss. That's something that I hope that people take the time to kind of develop that patience and that ability to be able to see what's actually happening instead of running towards what they believe is happening and make the most out of whatever does happen.
Shamiel Gary:
Right.
M-T:
That's a really big thing.
Shamiel Gary:
Yeah.
M-T:

Shamiel Gary:
And there's a half time for a reason, you know, I mean, there's a half time in games for a reason and shout out to my little nephew because he told me he said he had a dream and this dream was actually pretty crazy. And I told him I was going to steal it. And so after I said this one time, it will become my dream. That's my motto, Right. I case, everything I copy and steal everything. I shout out the person one time and then after that it becomes mine.
M-T:
It's yours.
Shamiel Gary:
Yeah. You know, you know, nothing new under the sun. But my nephew, he actually told me he had a dream. He said God told him that 2020 was the year of half time for people and God needed them to sit down and reflect and chill, not chill, but like reflect and spend time getting to know him. In 2021, he's using 2020 to springboard us forward into 2021. I was like that's actually good, that's actually good. And you know so crazy, he's ten years old. I was like oh.
M-T:
About that, how old is this young man? He's got to be about eighteen, nineteen. Reflections on life like that.
Shamiel Gary:
Yeah. He's trapped in a young man's body so after he said and I was like, man that's actually pretty true because I think we get caught up in the hustle and bustle of life trying to accomplish goals, trying to accomplish the mission. But how often do we actually take the time to take a half-time break and reflect on where we're going? Is this actually where we need to go? How's my life doing? And once we do that, shoot, you know, I mean, you seen many teams come out of halftime and they're down twenty-one and come back and win the game, you know what I mean? And I think that
M-T:
Sout out to the Patriots and the Falcons in the Super Bowl, that's that time of my life. Oh my God. But it's OK. It's OK.
Shamiel Gary:
I was actually referencing that. So I'm so sorry.
M-T:
Damn man, you killing me!
Shamiel Gary:
But I think I think we all can reflect and use this opportunity to springboard us forward, so yeah,
M-T:
No, that's real. That's real. That's real life right there, man. And I'm never going to let you be able to say if you ever say that story around me, I'm gonna be like yo it was his nephew, somebody out the back. And I'm amazed that I tell him I used to actually take him to a speaking engagement, let him tell that story, because after talking to everybody and getting them hyped up, they had his 10 year old come in and drop that knowledge on a real hard, oh man. If he can understand it and he can do it, why can't I? Let me pull out my best source and let's take it forward, man. That's right. That's what's up. Dope, shout out to the ... What's your nephew's name?
Shamiel Gary:
James,
M-T:
James, James, shout out to you, brother. You just got to shout it out on your first podcast. Hopefully it won't be the last one man. But you are out here. Having amazing thoughts man. Gotta keep motivating the people to be better bro. That's what's up. And I'm actually going to take that the essence of that with me man, and make sure I take that along as I move forward and try to do my best.
Shamiel Gary:
Steal it
M-T:
I'm not taking James' from the man of a reference. James, I'ma say James told me one day through his uncle that this is what it is. That's what ....
Shamiel Gary:
Right. I got you. I got you. But I guarantee you, after you say about five times, it's going to become your nephew.
M-T:
That's all right. it's ... Nephew. We'll be all right, man. That would be. Oh, man. So through all of this, you've been a fit person because that was a part of your job. That was a part of your skill set. But beyond that, with everything that you're doing, with all of the moving and shaking that you're doing, all the motivation and success that you've had, I know that that part of your life has not stray far. So how has maintaining a fit mind, body and spirit helped you to continue to be a leader, continue to be a grower, continue to be a game-changer in this world we are in today?
Shamiel Gary:
Yeah, it's if I came on here and said right after football I maintain a healthy lifestyle, I would be lying to everyone because after I got done playing football, man, I went from 210, about 240. I was eating cheesecake every day. I was eating pizza, whatever I wanted to eat, I was eating.
M-T:
You were living good, everybody got that time. Nobody out there needs to think that is going to be consistent all the time here in the first hour down to Dr Pepper. Like a ... when I'm not feeling the best, but as long as you get back on the horse, it is what it is.
Shamiel Gary:
Exactly. I think that's key to get back on the horse. You said it right right there. And so after I realized it was one of my, you need people in your life that's going to hold you accountable. And so, you know, check your community. If you have a whole bunch of people telling you, like you're doing everything great, you don't got the right people around, you need at least one or two people telling you, like, man, you need get on your stuff, you slacking. So I had one of my boys. I'm like, nah, but I'm not. I have gained that much weight. And then I take a picture of myself and I looked at my old picture. I was like, damn, this is looking pretty bad right now. And so I went on this journey of like playing basketball. I went in the gym. I was trying to do all the stuff I knew. And I was like, and it's kind of boring. So I had to find like a new challenge. I still go to the gym and I do a whole bunch of band workouts and, you know, do a lot of resistance bands. I don't lift any weights because I, what I found is body weight. Movement for myself is better on my joints, but on my knees, but on my ankle, is better on my back right there. And so I do a lot of gymnastics-type movements, resistance bands, a lot of that type of stuff. And then for my cardio, I jog a little bit, do a couple of sprints. But mainly what I do is, I do jujitsu. So I got into Brazilian jujitsu, you know, and I'm a blue belt now. And it has challenged me mentally, has allowed me to check my ego at the door. And I think everyone needs to get their ego checked at the door. We all have ego. And it's not about like turning off your ego. This is about recognizing we have an ego and then taking it when it's time to take it, you know what I mean? And it's nothing like having, like, a 19-year-old girl choke you out pretty much every time you roll with her, like there's nothing like it. Like she chokes me out every time and shout out to Hannah. She chockes me out every time, but so jujitsu the way I have maintained a healthy lifestyle mentally, physically and spiritually, because when you have someone on top of you choking you, your mind can't be 10 million other places. It has to be right on that situation. And it has allowed me to get outside my comfort zone. And so I think staying fit, it's all about pushing your body past the limit, pushing your body past that comfort zone and getting comfortable with the uncomfortable. And I think athletes like to say that right there. But do you actually like to get comfortable with uncomfortable in all phases of your life? And I think jujitsu has allowed me to do that.
M-T:
That's yo, that's what's up. That's what's up. shout-out to the BJJ folks out there, man. I'm definitely on my bucket list to get in there ... right now. So she's going to be all up in that piece because we've got to be able to get some folks a populist, right? Like you say. I hear talking about a girl, hey like my girlbe on that too. Shout our Harper. I love you to death. But that's real, man. And having an understanding of your own body, having an understanding of your own kinesthetic. So you know what works for you is the most important part of the fitness journey. You'll watch the Instagram and you look at all the YouTube videos ... Now here doing all that stuff. That's what works for them. That's what makes them feel good. That's what gives their endorphins going. That's what when they wake up and need to go do their workout, that's what gets them motivated because they know they're going to do that. It ain't for everybody. So find your own place. And now it becomes not so much of a physical thing, but now you start moving into that spiritual world, a metaphysics world where this becomes a mind shaper. You start to be steal in your own self and now you're going through the movements and getting that benefit, but also having that meditation time.
Shamiel Gary:
Right. Right.
M-T:
That's a lot of stuff that people don't really get about the workout process is that is supposed to be a time where you focus on this.
Shamiel Gary:
Exactly.
M-T:
You're pulling a deep squat. You're focused on making sure that you're on the outside of your foot and not the inside of you. You focus on everything that's going on in this moment and not splintering yourself into not one hundred million pieces like we do all the time. And like you said, with jujitsu. Somebody gotcha, gotcha. Cutting off your windpipe, you start to little air.
Shamiel Gary:
Right.
Shamiel Gary:
Eventually as your brains die, it'll be like all I look now we need to get this arm up because we need to make some happen. And whatever problems you have in whatever you got, the kids at home running around, you got your boss ... that job over here telling you stupid stuff, all that stuff goes away because it's like alright now we need to figure out how to get up out of here before we pass out or you pass out. I want to start thinking about nothing.
Shamiel Gary:
I have seen some people pass out. So it's listen, you've got to focus. And I think one thing to do with working out and doing all this other stuff, it teaches us discipline. And we all need strong discipline in our lives because, you know, discipline. Decisions plus discipline is the bridge between where we are and where we want to be. And if you don't have good decision-making, if you don't have strong discipline, you will not close that that gap where you are and where you want to be.
M-T:
There it is. Y'all just got the bridge gem, and that's what I'm calling it right there the bridges gem it's decisions plus discipline is the bridge to get wherever you want to go. May you end up somewhere you like. Man, I don't know how to get over there. You made a decision that you're going to get over there and you stay disciplined to the fact that you're going to do what you need to do to get over there. And guess what? Before you look up and realize you'll be over there like, yo, OK, when next bridge can I build. That what we call the bridge build gem, right there, because this mad's man is dropping gems all over the place. If you don't have your shovel and your backpack on and you're not scooping these gem up out the dirt that we give you at the Metric Mate Podcast you losing, bro. And I want to hear nothing about it. Don't complain about results you didn't get from the work that you didn't do, because I'm giving you this work right now, man. We give you this word, right, Shamiel. I'm giving you this word right now. My bad. I'm... We'll give you the word right now, get the shovel out, get your pickax, dig it out because he's dropping gems bro. Shamiel, I know you got to run, man. You got a busy day because you're a busy guy. And that's why I wanted to have you on here, because you've got so much going on and you maintain a positive attitude. You keep leading us into the future as a whole, as a group. But before you go, I got to ask you the question I asked all of my guests, man,
Shamiel Gary:
What's that?
M-T:
You've been through a lot. You've seen a lot. You've done a lot. You've been a part of a lot. You're still journeying and you're still growing. You're still becoming this Shamiel Gary of the future that will look back on this one and be like, yo, you were on the right path. But out of all that you've done, you've definitely learned and you definitely grown. If you had the power, that experience, into one big Peyton Manning head size jewel that you could drop on the community, give us that one big tie end jewel that would help everybody kind of move forward.
Shamiel Gary:
Yeah, I mean, I think, you know, I appreciate you having me on. I do want to say that first. And, you know, I really love what you're doing as far as with The Metric Mate, because I think it's important to just like I talked about the writing things down, I think it's important to know and track what you're doing. So I think you could change the game when it comes to that right there. So I just wanted to, you know, give you your flowers and tell you thank you as well. But as far as like one like big jewel, I think for myself is if you want things to change, one, you have to change. And in order for you to change, you just get one percent better every single day and have an open mind to grow and have an open mind to learning to be genuinely curious and don't and down your ego to the ground. Because many times people, you know, I remember doing this, my dad, you know, he would tell me some advice and I'll be like, yeah, I already know that. I already know that. But if I had that mindset of being a lifelong learner, I would have said to myself, OK, I know that, but how well am I applying? And too many times we get caught up. And I know that. I know that. I know that I'm good. I'm good. But ask yourself, how well are you applying the things you supposedly know? I mean, and so that is the lifelong gem right there is be a lifelong learner, be disciplined and be genuinely curious and open to what other people have to say in a way, you know, I mean, how can you grow, you know? I mean, because you're always looking to grow. And so how well are you applying to things you, quote unquote, know? So that's that's what I would say right there.
M-T:
There you go. You got it from the Shamiel, the gem meal. That's what I was that's what I was doing. I was putting gem and Shamiel to how the hell did I mess his name up and saying it all morning, Shamiel, the gem meal, because he's out here producing gems for you guys, throwing them on the ground like they bread crumbs so you know how to get back home. And that literally is the biggest one right before you reach to go, man, just be curious, continue to learn, continue to grow and ask yourself how well am I applying this knowledge that I have, even though I feel like I might have it? And be honest bro, like that I ain't got nothing that dropped the mic. We're done. We're out of here. ... That was a big one. That was a big one. And I appreciate you sharing it with the crew, man.
Shamiel Gary:
Thank you.
M-T:
No doubt. No doubt, bro. Man, thank you for coming. Thank you for being a part of our story. Thank you for sharing with our community all of this knowledge that you have put down in here, man. And this is not an old man that I'm talking to. He is not a grey hair insight. He probably won't have one for another three years because he got some time to be able to grow and mature and be this old man that he sees himself being in the future. But just listen to all of the grace and poise that this man has, all of the information that he's collected and put into his call for to be able to share with you all, man, and to share with the Metric Mate community. And we can't say enough how much we appreciate you taking the time to be here dude.
