Meet Braxton Davis and M-T Strickland of Metric Mate in Midtown
Today we’d like to introduce you to Braxton Davis and M-T Strickland.
As an avid gym-goer, Braxton typically performed cardio exercises where he could see how far he has run, how much time the exercise took, how many calories were burned, and get a snapshot of his overall cardiovascular fitness. However, when he moved on to the strength training portion of his workout, he did not have the same level of insight into his performance. How many calories were burned? How long did it take to complete a set? Did he make progress compared to previous strength training sessions? How can gym goers everywhere seamlessly capture this data, without the addition of yet another wearable device? Metric Mate was born to address these issues, and through the development of this technology, we began to realize other areas where this solution could be applied. For example, it can be applied to prehabilitation and rehabilitation to help physical therapists address their client’s needs. The Metric Mate platform can be utilized to receive data to assist healthcare companies in lowering deductibles for active clients. Furthermore, it can assist personal trainers in addressing accountability issues with their remote clients. The Metric Mate system not only acts as a data capture system to store your strength training data directly on your mobile device, but it can also act as a virtual personal trainer that can tell you what exercises to perform to meet your goals and determine if you are on track to do so.
Has it been a smooth road?
It has definitely not been a smooth road. With a start-up company, there are a lot of challenges that are inherent to developing in the start-up ecosystem, especially if this is your first start-up. For example, determining that we have technology to meet a specific need was fairly simple. However, determining the best product-market fit and choosing the path of least resistance has proven to be a little more daunting. For instance, who would be a better partner for pilot programs: gyms, physical therapists, weight equipment manufacturers, etc. Additionally, finances are always a concern for start-ups and are a huge factor in determining an overall strategic outlook for the company.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Metric Mate – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Metric Mate specializes in add-on technology for the fitness and wellness industries to make your typical gym equipment SMART. With the addition of our technology, exercise equipment, more specifically strength training equipment, can transmit user data directly to that user’s mobile device, helping them keep track of their workouts, provide the user with workout guidance, and/or allow a third-party (e.g., physical therapist, personal trainer, nutritionist, etc.) to provide the user with specified training routines. Currently, there is very little emphasis on keeping track of strength training regimens. Of course, our smartwatches can tell us how far we ran for cardio purposes, but they do not tell us how many repetitions we performed and at what resistance level.
Additionally, expecting a user to write this data down or plug it into their mobile device can be cumbersome and detract from their workouts. This platform allows us to work with corporate wellness programs to assist healthcare providers in lowering deductibles for active clients. With our technology, we can assist those in rehabilitation by offering them the opportunity to continue their physical therapy regimen away from their physical therapists and still provide them the opportunity to continue rehabilitation via remote oversight from their physical therapist. The fact that we can have a positive influence on a person’s mobility, reduce their re-injury rate, and have secured intellectual property with a blossoming patent portfolio are accomplishments that we are most proud of.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
Atlanta is a burgeoning leader in the tech start-up arena, which is definitely a plus for us. The network that we have built here is why we have been able to surpass many of our goals thus far. With several health-focused schools, businesses, and wellness organizations nearby, Atlanta has been instrumental in our success. With regards to the start-up industry, it can be more difficult to find seed and early-stage funding (Venture Capital, Angel Investment, etc.) in Atlanta because it has not traditionally been known as a start-up hub. So this is one thing that we believe can be improved upon as the start-up scene continues to grow.
